A Brief History of Harbourview Inn

Harbourview Inn, originally known as Harbour View House and Cottages, shares an exciting part of the history surrounding Smith's Cove. Smith's Cove was settled in 1759. In 1783, one of the earliest settlers, Joseph Potter Jr., exchanged land grants with a United Empire Loyalist named Joseph Smith from whom the community derived it's name. Smith settled on the southwest side of the point of land which now makes up the area where the current Harbourview Inn is located.

Smith's descendant Charles Sulis lived in the house which became the original Harbour View House. Upon his death the property moved into the hands of the Cossaboom family --- William Cossaboom was married to Charles Sulis' daughter, Clara. When the Cossabooms began Harbour View House and Cottages in 1898, it comprised the main house and four log cabins.

In 1923, Cossaboom found it necessary to expand the Harbourview Inn and built the Annex, the present day Inn. In the 1930's, a fire destroyed the original building that housed the Inn and at that time, the business was moved to the present day Harbourview Inn.

Summer guests erected a picturesque rustic chapel as part of the cottage colony. Eventually known as "Birch Chapel" because of the extensive use of birch and birch bark in its construction, this delightful chapel still remains on the property and church services are held each Sunday morning. (It is pictured above.)

Over three kilometers (two miles) of water frontage gives the Harbourview Inn a broad view of the unsurpassed charm of Annapolis Basin with the sweeping Fundy tides while dense woods serve as a backdrop to this absolutely unique resort. The delightful summer climate is invigorating in the daytime and restfully cool at night. The Harbour View House, now known as Harbourview Inn, with its bungalow colony is distinctly different from any other resort in Canada. A romantic location with an historic setting (and we are only minutes from the Digby Ferry, to St. John, New Brunswick).
